UTV & Side-by-Side Insurance
Sport side-by-sides and UTVs are not ATVs. A stock Polaris RZR Turbo R carries an MSRP north of $30,000. A Can-Am Maverick X3 with common aftermarket additions — long-travel suspension, light bars, stereo, cage and roof, wheels — can represent $40,000–$60,000 in total investment. Standard ATV/UTV policies from the big carriers price these machines with $500–$2,000 in custom parts coverage and actual cash value (ACV) payout.
That is not the right coverage for a sport build.
Core Coverage Types
Liability is the foundational UTV coverage — required in many states for UTVs operated on public trails or roads, and essential everywhere. Collision covers damage to your machine from contact with another vehicle or object. Comprehensive covers theft, fire, storm damage, vandalism, and other non-collision perils. Medical Payments covers injuries to you and your passengers in an accident. Uninsured ORV Motorist covers injuries when the other party has no insurance.
Agreed Value vs. ACV — The Most Important Decision
Standard policies pay actual cash value (ACV) — the depreciated market value of your machine at the time of loss. On a 2023 RZR Turbo R with $12,000 in aftermarket parts two years into ownership, ACV might be $22,000. Your total investment was $42,000. That $20,000 gap is on you without agreed value coverage.
Agreed value means you and the insurer agree on the total value of your machine — including all accessories and modifications — at policy inception. A total loss pays that agreed amount, no depreciation argument.
For any sport UTV with significant aftermarket content, agreed value is the correct coverage type.
Transport Coverage
Damage to your UTV while loaded on your trailer en route to a ride is not always covered by your auto policy. Standard auto policies cover the trailer itself but may not cover the contents (your UTV). Transport coverage on your UTV policy fills this gap — your machine is covered whether it's being ridden or hauled.
Seasonal Storage Discount
Riders in northern states store their machines 4–6 months per year. Seasonal policies and storage discounts reduce premium for machines that aren't ridden year-round while maintaining comprehensive coverage (theft, fire, storm) during the storage period.

Frequently Asked Questions
Homeowners policies typically exclude motorized vehicles. Some provide minimal coverage for non-motorized equipment used on the insured property, but UTVs used off-property are generally not covered. A dedicated UTV/side-by-side policy is required.
Standard auto policies cover street-registered vehicles. UTVs that are not street-registered and not operated on public roads are typically excluded. Even street-legal UTVs often need a separate UTV policy in addition to auto coverage for their off-road use.
Full coverage typically means liability + collision + comprehensive. For a sport UTV, we also recommend agreed value (not ACV) and scheduled accessories coverage to ensure your full build investment is protected.
Only if your policy includes transport coverage. Standard auto policies cover the trailer but not always its contents. A UTV policy with transport coverage protects your machine while it is being hauled to a ride.
Basic liability-only UTV insurance runs $150–$400/year. Full coverage with agreed value and accessories on a $30,000+ sport UTV typically runs $400–$900/year depending on the machine value, accessories, rider age and experience, and location.
State requirements vary. Many states now require liability insurance for UTVs operated on public trails, OHV parks, or public roads. Even where not required, liability coverage is essential — an off-road incident causing injury or property damage to a third party creates real financial exposure.
